If you charge an EV at home, sooner or later you look for a charging cable holder for your wallbox. Most search results point to a Type 2 wall mount. That is one of two solutions, and which one fits you depends mainly on where you charge and what kind of cable you have.
Solution 1: a wall mount at the wallbox
A wall mount usually has two parts: a hook or drum to wind the cable on, and a plug holder for the Type 2 connector. It is screwed to the wall next to the wallbox.
- Good for: wallboxes with a tethered cable that always stay in the same spot in the garage or carport.
- Limits: it stays on the wall. It does not help at a public charging post, at work or on holiday, and while charging the cable still lies between wallbox and car.
Solution 2: a holder that stays on the cable
Many drivers do not have a tethered cable but a loose Mode 3 charging cable with a Type 2 plug that travels in the trunk. That is exactly what the Cable Cobra is made for. It clamps onto the charging-station end of the cable and stays there. You wind the cable onto it in loops. When charging, you only take off as many loops as you need to reach the car. The rest hangs coiled at the wallbox or charging post instead of lying in the dirt.
- Good for: loose Type 2 cables, public charging posts, street parkers, changing charging locations.
- Limits: for a wallbox with a tethered cable, a wall mount is the more obvious choice.
Side by side
| Wall mount | Holder on the cable | |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting | on the wall, with wall plugs | on the cable, with an Allen key |
| At home | yes | yes |
| Public charging post | no | yes |
| Cable off the ground while charging | only the wound-up part | yes, the unused part hangs coiled |
| Cable in the trunk | loosely coiled | flat coil, secured with a rubber strap |
Which one is right for you?
If your wallbox has a tethered cable and you charge almost only at home, a wall mount is enough. If you use a loose Type 2 cable, charge on the road too, or are tired of wet and dirty cables at the charging post, a holder on the cable is the more flexible solution. You can also use both.
In short
- A Type 2 wall mount keeps the cable tidy in one fixed place.
- A cable holder on the cable takes that order with you wherever you charge.
- The Cable Cobra fits all Type 2 charging cables (Mode 3), regardless of brand or thickness.
