A Type 2 charging cable is heavy, several meters long and likes to tangle in the trunk. If you just bundle it up after charging, next time you get knots, loops and often dirty hands. A few simple habits keep the cable tidy and clean.
1. Always wind in even circles
The most common mistake is winding the cable around hand and elbow. It twists a little with every loop, and knots appear when you unwind it. Better: lay the cable down loosely and pick it up in large, even circles. If it still twists, rotate the part on the ground around its own axis a few times until it lies flat.
2. Unwind from the car to the charging post
Plug the cable into the car first, then unwind it loop by loop as you walk to the charging post. That way only as much cable lies on the ground as you really need. When packing up, do the same in reverse. Note: some older models require the cable to be plugged into the charging post first. In that case take a few loops off there and walk towards the car.
3. Do not pack it wet and dirty
After charging in the rain the cable is often wet and covered in road dirt. A quick wipe with a cloth before it goes into the trunk protects the carpet and your hands. Do not clean the plug contacts with water. Keep them dry and put the protective cap on if your cable has one.
Five simple habits that keep your Type 2 cable tidy and clean.4. Store it flat instead of stuffing it in a bag
A flat-coiled cable takes less space and is ready to unwind next time. A cable bag is handy as long as the cable is not crumpled inside it.
5. Use a holder that stays on the cable
The Cable Cobra makes this routine easier. It is clamped once onto the charging-station end of the cable and stays there. The cable is wound onto the Cobra in circles, when charging you only take off the loops you need, and the rest hangs clean above the ground. For transport, secure the coiled cable with the included rubber strap.
In short
- Wind in even circles, not around your elbow.
- Only unwind as much cable as you need.
- Wet or dirty? Wipe it first, then pack it.
- A flat coil saves space and nerves.
